In 2000,
the concept of kTracks was conceived and developed by
part time inventor / full time engineer Dan Karales.
While living in Michigan, Dan a die hard ATV rider, wanted
the ability to enjoy his sport ATV year round. The snow in
Michigan made it hard for this pleasure to be realized. As
anyone living in the snowy regions with a ATV, know that
ATV's do not perform very well in the snow due to the lack
of traction, spinning tires, etc. Also, Dan did not want the
added expense of owning a snowmobile. A snowmobile
that sits in your garage depreciating and taking
up space for 8 months out of the year, not to mention
the additional insurance cost.
Dan wanted a kit that was useful ALL year round, on
any and all surfaces; sand, snow, mud, you name it! A kit
that would NOT sacrifice speed or performance. He did
his research and could not locate any kits of the sort.
Being a solutions provider, Dan went to work designing on
his computer and working in his garage after work and on the
weekends. It was truly a labor of love, and in a few months
he had working prototype.
In 2001, knowing he was on to something, Dan filed for and
received a patent on his kit design. Dan spent the
next few years improving the concept and prototypes. Dan's
company at the time, Pro-Draft Design, received a major
contract to design and develop environmental products, which
tied up Dan's time and resources for a few years. His
prototype kits were then used for enjoyment by him and his
friends.
Over the next few years, Dan was approached by various "wanna-be"
kit manufacturers wanting to purchase his patent. They
offered him a substantial amount of money to take over his
patent. The manufacturers had similar kits, but with
various limitations. Their kits had stipulations of
maximum speed, cautions of jumping, extra mounting hardware,
adapters and dangerous tension rods that could easily break
causing the tracks to come off and mangle the rider's leg
along. Not to mention the extreme gear reduction loss with
their kits. No wonder they wanted Dan's patent, Dan had
none of these restricting or challenging issues with his
kit. Dan turned down the offers to sell his patent, he
wanted to be a part of his creation and and offer it to the
public at an affordable price.
Over the next several years Dan struggled to bring an affordable kit to market. Along the way he met up with some great partners and brought all the missing pieces together to provide customers with a top of the line product that will provide years of use with little maintence and extra cost.
